Hood Scoop Plate Modifications
Opening up the hood scoop plate.
I wanted to open up the hood scoop to let in some cool air, but didn't want
to completely remove the plate. I didn't want a lot of rain and dirt on
the motor. What I tried to do was open the back part of the plate so rain
water would still go the original path. If you look in the hood scoop you
can see a sort of hump. On the back side of that hump (where you can't see
from the outside) I removed a strip of metal about 19" long and 1/2"
high. I pop riveted a piece of flat stock aluminium to the top part of
the opening for some structural rigidity. The stock also creates a ridge
that may channel some rain water off to the sides.
I removed the plate as per Aaron's instructions. Then removed the weather
stripping from the center part but left the outer edge strip there. I
marked where I was planning to cut and drilled a few holes so I could cut a
the side and bottom line with a jig saw. Cut off the flap with some tin
snips. After de-burring the opening, I cut a piece of flat stock to fit
the top of the hole. The ends of the stock bend down a little to match up
with the plate. I pre-drilled holes in the stock for the pop
rivets. Lined up the flat bar on the plate and then drilled and riveted it
down. I painted everything with Hi temp flat black paint. After it dried
I put silicone sealant by the ends of the Al bar and made some beads that
may help channel some rain water a little. Then I just bolted it back in
place.
