Hella
Air Horn - Installation Guide and Images![]()
Attached are pictures of the Hella Air Horn install on my RS as well as the
bracket I made to mount the horns. I'm not sure which year Legacys this
will apply to, but my wife's 97 Outback has the same ABS unit as the
RS. There are 2 bolts on the ABS unit that I used to secure the
bracket. After looking at the pics you will be able to tell if you can do
the same thing. Today I installed the same horns on a 2000 RS which has a
slightly different intake than my 99' but it still worked fine.
Here is what I did to make the bracket. From the local hardware store I
got some flat metal stock that was 3/4" wide. It was about 36" long and
cost $1.99. You only need 10" to work with. I had a vice to work with and
bent the bracket as shown in the pic. I made two (one for a friend) and
found it easier to drill the holes before bending. I looked again in the
outback and it looks like you may have to alter the dimensions of the sides
(mine are 3") Just a tip, before I bent the angles in the vice I used a
torpedo level to see if it was in there square. Then I painted it black
after I did all the drilling and bending. If you look at your ABS unit,
you'll see 2 - 12mm bolts holding it in place. I took those off an put the
bracket on there. Take off the intake parts to get to it better. I added
a lock washer under the bolt for good measure. When you have the bracket
in place you can move it to an angle that will suite you. The compressor
mounts towards the front or the car by the headlight. On my wife's OB
there was a power lead right there that you can use to power the
compressor. I know they supply a relay but I didn't end up using it. A
few others have just used the normal power lead and haven't had any
problems. Either have I so far. If you use that power lead, just remember
to unplug the horn by the battery. The RS had 2 wires for the horn a +and
-, I think the legacy only had a + wire. You can always catch a ground
right by the compressor.
The install for the FIAMM horns is much easier because you don't have to
make any brackets. There are existing mounting spots. There were no
difficulties to the wiring the twin FIAMM horns. The horns ground through
the brackets (supplied) all that is needed is the proper bolt to mount the
bracket by the battery. I did have to bend the bracket slightly close to
the bolt to clear the battery. The only real trick was to use some wire
cutters (diagonal type) to snip off the little clip on the side of the
wire plug end. That made it easier to plug into the horns. I can't find
the exact model number, however they are easily recognized. The horns come
in a pair and are red on one side and black on the other with a chrome
grill over the opening. They resemble a french horn rather than the disk type. The cost
was $21.69. They are available at any chain type auto parts store like Pep
Boys or Western Auto. They sound great and are simple to install. There
are versions that have 2 connections. You'll just have to ground one side
is all.

This includes 4 pictures of the horns. The first and second pictures are of the horn assembly, located where it was mounted at the original location of the horns (slight modifcation). The third and forth pictures are of the special installation location needed for the horns themselves. This required me toput a mounting bar into the retaining wall of the tire well.
